Israel’s National Security Council has advised Israelis to leave some tourist areas in southern Sri Lanka, including Argum Bay, due to possible terrorist threats. The US Embassy also issued an alert, with police urging citizens to avoid the area to increase security.

Without revealing much about the exact nature of the threat, the Security Council asked Israelis in the rest of Sri Lanka to remain vigilant and refrain from holding large gatherings in public areas.
“Israeli security agencies… are in close contact with Sri Lankan security authorities and are monitoring developments,” it said.

The US Embassy in Sri Lanka also released a security alert saying it had received “credible intelligence alerts of attacks targeting popular tourist destinations in the Arugam Bay area”.
“Citizens are strongly urged to avoid the Gulf of Argument area until further notice from the United States,” it added but did not elaborate. Police have strengthened security in tourist areas.
